Detox Process

Detoxification is the process of eliminating harmful substances from the body. Our bodies continuously detoxify through the kidneys, liver and even lungs, releasing chemicals and compounds that can cause harm if they stay in the body. However, when someone has been addicted to drugs or alcohol, the body may not be capable of detoxifying completely without assistance. Akua Mind & Body integrates three essential components to provide a complete and safe detoxification.

The 3 Essential Components of Akua’s Integrative Detoxification:

Evaluation: We first test for the presence of substances of abuse in your system, measuring their concentration as well as screening for co-occurring mental and physical conditions. At Akua, this evaluation further includes a comprehensive assessment of your medical and psychological conditions as well as your current social situation to help determine the appropriate level of treatment following detoxification. We understand that addiction is multilayered, so you will spend time with your counselor to make certain we address key areas in your life. From this assessment, we create an individualized detoxification recovery plan.

Stabilization: Once evaluated, you will enter the stabilization phase of treatment at Akua. During this phase, pharmacological (medication) and psychosocial interventions will be utilized to assist you through the acute intoxication and withdrawal process progressing into a medically stable, fully-supported, substance-free state. This is often accomplished with the assistance of medications to ensure your medical safety and minimize discomfort. At Akua, we believe stabilization should include familiarizing you with what to expect in the treatment milieu. It is also during this time that Akua’s licensed counselors and therapists will seek information from your family and friends to help better understand your addiction dynamic. This is an educational and transformative time as the body and mind begin to clear harmful substances. Through counseling, medication, healthy nutrition, sleep, hydration, acupuncture, yoga and other treatment modalities, we stabilize not only your body, but your mind as well.

Continuing Care: At Akua, we believe detoxification is just the first stage in the treatment process and that a more formal treatment program is necessary should you wish to have the best chance at long-term recovery. To facilitate this, you will work with a counselor to prepare for the next step in your recovery, whether it be an inpatient, outpatient, or home setting. If you have demonstrated a pattern of completing detoxification services and then failing to engage in substance abuse treatment, a written treatment contract may be created with the help of your counselor to encourage entrance into a continuing program. It is our goal at Akua that once you complete detoxification, you will feel energized and refreshed, ready to engage in the next phase of recovery with joy and motivation.
